Dare to be Weird

“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Rom. 12:2a

When I was growing up as the middle between two sisters, they thought it was hilarious to watch me come out of my skin when they proclaimed:

“You’re weird!”

While they were joking in good fun I just couldn’t take it. It made me crazy and they knew it. The more I fought back (“No I’m not!!!) the harder they laughed and the more they would say it. Sisters do that sort of thing.

Now that I’m in my forties and thankfully more secure of who I am in Christ, someone saying I’m weird is hardly the worst thing. In fact, appearing strange to the world is part of my job description as a Christian.

According to Scripture, there are many things about Christ followers that should cause the world to take note. There are things about how we live, what we watch, how we react, how we care for each other, what we value and how we spend our money that should frankly confuse people. We are called to be set apart and boldly follow what Jesus taught which has never been easy or popular.

Living for the truth is costly and it takes courage. There are so many messages the world shouts at us daily that are the opposite of what the Bible teaches:

  • The world says we should take great pride in our independence. God’s Word helps us see our need for dependence upon Him.
  • The world says there isn’t any real truth. God’s Word tells us there is absolute truth we can stand on.
  • The world says that if your good outweighs your bad, in the end you have a ticket to heaven. God’s Word tells us we are all sinners in desperate need of a Savior.

Conforming to the world will always be easier, popular and more comfortable– at least initially; however, as we grow as believers we learn the narrow road of obedience is life-giving and joyful. We may look crazy to the world but the peace that comes from living for Jesus is unlike anything the world can offer.

So let’s become much more concerned about living biblically correct than politically correct. Let’s be brave and stand for truth in a loving, winsome way. Go ahead and be weird. Fly your freak flag. The world needs to see it.
