Your Real Identity

Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America with over ten million victims each year. Similar to the natural crime, many victims of spiritual identity theft don’t know what happened until it’s too late. This kind of theft goes unaddressed for years until you face a difficult situation, such as a divorce, the death of a loved one, the loss of a job, a chronic illness or a financial struggle, and end up having to take a personal inventory of your life.

At that point, you suddenly discover that your spiritual identity has been stolen in the process and end up asking yourself the critical question, “Who am I?” Only then can you begin the long and challenging journey in search of your spiritual identity. It’s the only way that you can finally discover and reclaim the “real” you.

Spiritual identity theft occurs when Satan slowly and subtly tries to steal your sense of who you are spiritually. After experiencing this type of theft, I realized it was more traumatic and life-changing than the loss of my money and credit. I take comfort in knowing that my real identity is “in Christ” when I gave my life to Him.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”  2 Corinthians 5:17

To be “in Christ” refers to a believer’s spiritual relationship with Him. You become a new creation by the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. When you connect with Christ, the old things from your past are gone and all things become new in your life.

I had a very profound dream, which gave me new insight on what it means to have my identity “in Christ.”  When I walked into a room with several jail cells, I saw my books and other things related to my life sitting on a shelf.  While talking to a prisoner, I was suddenly behind the bars myself.  After anxiously trying to figure out how to get out, I finally pushed the cell door and discovered it had been open the whole time.

When my identity was dependent on what I did (e.g., author/attorney), I was in bondage (behind bars). However, when I discovered who I really am, the door was unlocked and I was free to walk out. The puzzling part was that I still could not find my “identity.”  After meditating on the dream, I received a powerful revelation. The reason I couldn’t find my identity was because someone had it – not the identity thief…but the Identity Giver (Christ). The Lord was letting me know that He had my identity now, so I no longer had to worry about it because He was holding it for safekeeping.

My “real” (spiritual) identity as well as yours is in Christ, so you can be assured that you will be exactly who you were created to be and fulfill your purpose when you stay connected to Him. ~ DeMonica D. Gladney, Esq.
