Anchor of our Soul

“For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.” (I Corinthians 5:1)

Approximately ten years ago, one of my dear friends, Jodi, was diagnosed with cancer. When she received the diagnosis, she was anxious about going through the grueling process of chemotherapy and facing the possibility of dying. There was an emotional roller coaster of feeling hopeful one day about beating the cancer to feeling hopeless another day.

As her physical body became weaker, her spiritual strength became stronger as she began to walk in the freedom and security of God’s saving grace over her. I still remember the conversation that we had where she looked at me unwaveringly and said, “Edna, if I beat this cancer that is great. If I do not beat this cancer that is great too. I know I will be with the Lord.”

As women we crave security. When our security is shaken by hard, unforeseen circumstances such as cancer, our faith is tested. If the foundation of our faith is not firmly anchored in the assurance of God’s love and sovereign, eternal plans for us (Hebrews 6:19), we spin out of control with anxiety. If our faith is firmly anchored in knowing that earth is only our temporary home and heaven is our eternal home, not only do we have security, we have hope for something even greater!

God’s saving purposes for us are unshakable. He wants us to enjoy the security of His good plans for us. To know that the Lord has greater and bigger plans for us that not even death can destroy, we can live radically for Jesus and not be shaken by what life brings us. Do you know where you will be if you were to die today? (John 3:16).
