Don’t Close Your Eyes

“And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, LORD, so that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.” 2 Kings 6:17 NIV

When you pray, who’s listening?
How would your prayers change if you could see angels waiting to be sent on assignment?

If we could see into the supernatural world all around us we would be astounded, much like Elisha’s servant was when his eyes were opened to see that heaven’s army was greater in number than the massive army that surrounded them.

The King of Aram was trying to wage war on Israel, but God thwarted his plans by telling Elisha about his military position and strategy. So he sent horses and chariots and a strong force there to capture him. When Elisha’s servant got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked. “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, LORD, so that he may see.” Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. As the enemy came down toward him, Elisha prayed to the LORD, “Strike this army with blindness.” So he struck them with blindness, as Elisha had asked. Then Elisha, the very man they came to capture led then to the king of Israel. When they arrived, Elisha prayed “LORD, open these men’s eyes and let them see.” He did. There they stood, vulnerable to their enemy, the king of Israel. He asked, what do I do with them, kill them? No, feed them and send them back. They never attacked Israel again.

When you are surrounded by enemies, or just feel the pressures of life closing in, it’s a good time for prayer. In fact, it’s moments like this that drive me into focused prayer, perhaps my most honest cries for help. But when we are blind to the truth of God we are vulnerable to the enemy.

Why does it take intense pressure to drive us to deeper faith? Our human nature is to reach out to all natural resources until we need something more, something supernatural. What if we went there first? That’s what prayer is.

We fall into the trap of relying on what we can see. Natural resources yield natural results. If you want supernatural results, you will have to rely on the supernatural.

Let’s try something new.

Start your prayers with, “LORD, open my eyes” and let me know what happens.

In His Unfailing Love,
