“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today and forever.” Heb. 13:8
One of the greatest blessings in my life is learning the attributes of God as a child. My parents helped teach “children’s church” at the small Bible church we attended in our West Texas town. In children’s church we learned, among other things, these descriptions of God’s character that were way over our heads—words like immutability, omnipotence, and veracity. Somehow we caught onto these concepts with repetition and a cute little card box we each had that listed the attribute on each card along with a symbol to help illustrate it (i.e. the word sovereign had a crown next to it to help depict God being the King over all).
Little did I know that those big concepts were shaping my view of God and helping me see life through a Christian worldview (I didn’t know what that meant at the time). I began understanding who God is and what He is like. I learned to depend on His constant, unchanging character with each circumstance I faced. Little by little these foundational truths served as the building blocks of my theology.
Now as an adult I realize how much I daily depend on a right understanding of God. Just this past week I was tossed all around with varying circumstances causing me to rely upon the Lord. My view of God mattered in every one of these situations. In starting a new school for our kindergartener I was forced to trust in the Lord’s omnipresence and sovereignty over Jack’s life. In getting used to a partial home schooling routine I am driven to my knees to believe in God’s sufficiency to help me through my days as a teacher. With struggling to recover from a lingering virus I’m relying upon the Lord’s omnipotence as my Great Physician.
As A.W. Tozer said, “What comes to mind when you think about God is the most important thing about you.” It is so very, very true. Our view of God matters every single day. If we don’t know Him, we can’t trust Him. If we can’t trust Him we will try to get through life with our own solutions. If we try making it on own we will despair because life is just too big and too hard and we were not made to live independently of our Creator. Our solutions just won’t cut it. We desperately need a dependable, loving, powerful God to step in and rescue us each and every day.
When we really know God and His character, we run to Him with our messy, broken situations and we are constantly aware of our weakness and His strength. Our only hope is in Him.
