Where True Healing Comes From

“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” Is. 53:5

Lately our little family has been yearning for healing. Our 6 year old, Jack, just underwent major surgery to correct two areas where his airway was significantly compromised. We had over a year to anticipate the procedure and several months of anxious preparation as we tried to keep him away from germs and viruses. All along our prayer has been for the Lord to heal our son.

We prayed that the Lord would heal Jack without the need for surgery. We believed He could, but He chose not to. He had something different for us which meant a big surgery that was scary for us and him.

Now that we have been home from the hospital for a month and we see our son thriving, we are able to reflect on all that the Lord did in this process. He alone carried us through and met every need along the way. We are grateful for excellent care and proximity to it. We are grateful for the skills and wisdom God gives doctors. We are grateful for many, many prayers from our loving community of family and friends. We are exceedingly grateful that our son has a bright and healthy future.

Physical healing is a yearning and constant prayer for everyone of us. We all have someone in our lives who is struggling with an illness or condition that is causing pain. You may be walking through something difficult right now. Disease and illness are aching reminders of our world’s fallen condition.

There is great hope, however, if you belong to Christ. The greatest healing you and I will ever need was provided on a Cross on Calvary.  Our deepest affliction and terminal disease was healed wholly and completely by the sacrifice of the sinless Lamb—Jesus the Son of God. His blood covered and atoned for the sins of the world—yours and mine. This brings the greatest hope on the darkest of days.

We may never see the physical or mental healing we pray for this side of heaven. I have friends right now who prayed fervently for the Lord to heal and they have had to bury their loved ones. This doesn’t stop us from praying. We continue to request healing from the Father because He has the ability to grant it and the Bible instructs us to petition the Great Physician.

If the healing doesn’t come, we can ultimately rest knowing that one day we will be in a place where “He will wipe away every tear… where death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore” (Rev. 21:4).

What hope, indeed.
