Keep Going

“As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.” Mark 2:14 NIV

Beams of sunlight divided my comfy work boots casting tall shadows on the green fields. I was running a farm-like operation and walked about meeting the people who worked there. They came to and fro going about their work. Some were bakers, others tended the animals, others were learning music. A very elite cooking school was part of the operation. I was eager to learn about the water system, from pools and fountains housing fish and other life, to the waste water. Not sure where to begin, a voice in my soul whispered, “Go Exploring.” So, I did.

All of my skills began to kick in as I built a list of actions, questions, and kept exploring and observing.  A young couple from Harvard went about their work. It was a beautiful  place where creative, smart and authentic people chose to spend their time. My husband stood there with me. I told him I was so grateful  that God gave me a new place to learn new skills for something greater. He said, “You asked God for something new, you believed Him, and look at what He did for you.”

For the last 3 months I have been trying to figure out that dream. Where is this place? How do I get there? When do I go?  It’s the mysterious side of God that can either fuel or frustrate.

When Jesus called his disciples, he didn’t share the road map. He said, “Follow me.” And, they did. No one asked, “Where are we going? How do we get there?” One did ask “When do I go?” by requesting to first bury his father before leaving. To which Jesus clearly answered, “Follow me, and let the dead bury their own dead.”  How are we supposed to leave immediately on an unknown journey? By keeping our eyes fixed on the One who does.

Just like the disciples, we are personally invited by the King of kings to leave behind everything naturally known to us to live a supernatural life, in Him, through Him and because of Him. The natural journey has natural results and is fueled by natural strength and wisdom. You may be enjoying your natural journey, but consider this. The supernatural journey is fueled by resurrection power that raises death to life and has eternal impact. It is a journey beyond natural wisdom. No wonder I can’t figure it out. That is not what I am called to do.  I am called to have faith large enough to ask for and expect the supernatural life. His instructions are, “Follow me.”

Jogging the beautiful streets of Philadelphia last week, I encountered a homeless man at an intersection.  As I was pausing for the cross signal, he yelled, “Keep going. Keep going. Keep going.” Perhaps he is tasting the natural life that ran out of natural strength and natural resources. Even when it makes sense to pause for a traffic light, he can’t stand the thought of anyone stopping. Keep going, so you don’t get stuck.

Life can be a mystery to us, but it’s not at all to the God of Mystery. If we fix our eyes on the Author of Life, we can fearlessly Keep Going.

Are you stuck trying to figure things out?

Just today, what could happen if you let go of the best plan for your life and chased after God?

In His Unfailing Love,
